02

Turnitin AI Detection

Active
Founder
Christian Storm (Turnitin product team)
Organization
Turnitin, LLC
Launched
April 4, 2023
Base
Proprietary classifier built on top of Turnitin's existing similarity index
Vendor claim
98% accuracy with under 4% false positives
Independent accuracy
68% overall in HumanGPT's May 2026 test; widely contested by independent academic studies
False positive rate
6% on native English, 24% on non-native English
Pricing
Bundled with Turnitin institutional licenses; not available standalone
Bypass profile
88% catch rate on raw ChatGPT, 21% on humanized output

Turnitin rolled AI detection into its existing plagiarism workflow rather than launching a standalone product. Vanderbilt University famously turned it off in August 2023, citing reliability concerns. The University of Texas at Austin, Northwestern's writing program, and several Cal State campuses followed. The MLA's 2024 guidance explicitly advised against standalone use.

03

ZeroGPT
Launched
Early 2023
Base
Statistical detector with a lightweight classifier layer
Vendor claim
Over 98% accuracy

Bypass profile
76% catch rate on raw ChatGPT, 18% on humanized output

Free, fast, no-signup access made it the detector students run on themselves before submission. Particularly sensitive to formulaic openings ('In conclusion,' 'In today's society') and AI-typical transitions. Lowest accuracy of the major tools but useful as a quick gut-check.

06

Sapling AI Detector

Active
Founder
Ziang Xie
Organization
Sapling Intelligence Inc.
Launched
AI detection added 2023 (company founded 2020)

Bypass profile
84% catch rate on raw ChatGPT, 24% on humanized output

Originally a writing assistant similar to Grammarly. Added AI detection as a side feature. Per-sentence detection is useful for finding inserted AI paragraphs in mostly-human documents but produces high false positive rates on dry, technical writing.

07

Winston AI

Active
Founder
Thierry Lavergne
Organization
Winston AI
Launched
2023
Base
Combined plagiarism + AI detection classifier with OCR support
Vendor claim

Kreshnik Halili and Genc Hamiti
Organization
Crossplag Inc.
Launched
AI detection added 2023 (plagiarism product since 2020)

09

OpenAI Text Classifier

Deprecated
Founder
OpenAI safety team
Organization
OpenAI
Launched
January 31, 2023
Base
Fine-tuned GPT model trained on labeled human and AI samples
Vendor claim
Originally claimed only 26% true positive rate at the chosen threshold
Independent accuracy
Acknowledged as low at launch; never achieved competitive accuracy
False positive rate
9% on the test set, in line with vendor disclosure
Pricing
Free during its lifetime
Bypass profile
Not relevant; tool was deprecated before serious bypass testing matured

OpenAI built and shipped its own AI text detector on January 31, 2023, billed as a tool to help users identify AI-generated text. It was discontinued just six months later, on July 20, 2023, with OpenAI explicitly citing 'low rate of accuracy.' The shutdown was a major signal about the difficulty of the problem: the company that built the AI could not reliably detect its own output.

10

Hugging Face OpenAI Detector (RoBERTa)

Research only
Founder
Hugging Face team and OpenAI research community
Organization
Hugging Face
Launched
2019 (originally for GPT-2 detection)

Independent accuracy
Designed to support human judgment, not replace it
False positive rate
Not applicable in the binary sense
Pricing
Free, hosted by Harvard NLP
Bypass profile
Visualizes the predictability of each token; humans interpret

An academic research tool rather than a commercial detector. Highlights each word in a passage by how predictable it was to GPT-2. Foundational for the field; many later detector papers built on its insights about token-level predictability.

12

DetectGPT

Research only
Founder
Eric Mitchell and colleagues
Organization
Stanford University

Easily defeated by even basic paraphrasing

A 2023 Stanford research paper that proposed measuring how much a model's likelihood of a passage changes under small perturbations. Influential in academic circles, less deployed in production. Open implementations exist on GitHub.

13

Binoculars

Research only
Founder
Abhimanyu Hans, Avi Schwarzschild, Yuxin Wen, et al.

Strong on raw AI; closer to mid-tier on humanized text
False positive rate
Industry-average
Pricing
Enterprise API; custom pricing
Bypass profile
Comparable to other production detectors

Hive originally built moderation infrastructure for adult and harmful content classification. AI text detection was added as enterprise demand grew. Used by major social platforms and content marketplaces rather than by individual users.

Mid-tier in independent tests
False positive rate
Above average on formal writing
Pricing
Free tier; Premium from $9.95/month bundled with the paraphraser
Bypass profile
Reliably bypassed by dedicated humanizers

QuillBot is best known as a paraphraser. The AI detector is a side feature that often disagrees with QuillBot's own paraphrased output, an irony noted by users. Acquired by Course Hero in 2021; QuillBot acquired Scribbr in 2023.

20

GPTKit

Active
Founder
GPTKit team
Organization
GPTKit
Launched
2023
Base
Multi-method consensus across six different detection approaches
Vendor claim
Up to 99% accuracy via consensus
Independent accuracy
Mid-tier; consensus does not fully solve the underlying signal problem
False positive rate
Variable
Pricing
Free with daily caps; paid plans available
Bypass profile
Defeated by humanizers that smooth multiple signals

Markets itself on the consensus angle: combining six different detection methods into one verdict. The approach is sound in principle but the underlying detectors share many of the same weaknesses, so consensus does not fully resolve the false positive problem.

21

AI Detector Pro

Active
Founder
AI Detector Pro team
Organization
AI Detector Pro
Launched
2023
Base
Proprietary classifier
Vendor claim
98% accuracy

Active
Founder
Christian Perry and Bars Juhasz
Organization
Undetectable.ai
Launched
